Job Description
The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing the daily accounting operations, managing the general ledger, preparing financial statements, and ensuring strict compliance with national tax regulations and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). This role acts as a strategic partner to the Project Manager and Senior Office Engineer, providing critical financial data, project cost analysis, and cash flow forecasting to ensure the project’s profitability and financial transparency. The Senior Accountant also supervises and guides the Project Cashiers and junior accounting staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage the full accounting cycle, including the preparation and posting of complex journal entries, month-end, and year-end close processes.
- Perform and review detailed reconciliations of all bank accounts, intercompany transactions, and sub-ledgers (Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Inventory, and Fixed Assets).
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statement) in compliance with IFRS.
- Analyze financial discrepancies and investigate variances between budgeted and actual figures.
- Collaborate with the Senior Office Engineer and Project Manager to track project costs, monitor the budget, and calculate the percentage of completion.
- Ensure costs are accurately allocated to the correct project codes, cost centers, and Bill of Quantities (BOQ) items.
- Prepare monthly project financial performance reports, highlighting cost overruns, material consumption variances, and profitability analysis.
- Ensure 100% compliance with Ethiopian tax laws and directives issued by the Ministry of Revenues.
- Prepare and submit monthly and annual tax declarations, including VAT, Withholding Tax (2%), and Income Tax.
- Calculate, declare, and remit employee pension contributions (7% employee / 11% employer) and other statutory deductions.
- Act as the primary liaison during tax audits, providing required documentation and resolving any queries from tax authority officials.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree (BA) or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Economics.
- Experience: Minimum of 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance. At least 4 to 6 years of experience in a senior or supervisory role.
