Job Description
Under the direct supervision of Supply Chain Manager or Logistic Manager; the Import officer is responsible for managing and coordinating all company import activities. The role ensures imported goods comply with Ethiopian regulations, arrive on time, and are properly documented and accounted for.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Receive and review Proforma Invoices (PFIs) from Procurement or Operations.
- Check pricing, HS codes, and required documents for compliance.
- Coordinate with Finance and GFM on payment terms, foreign currency availability, and import budget.
- Register approved PFIs and track import progress.
- Prepare and submit Import Permit applications to SWS.
- Arrange import insurance in line with company and NBE requirements.
- Process bank and NBE approvals for foreign currency allocation, LC opening, and supplier payments.
- Follow up with banks on document endorsement and release.
- Track shipments and share updates with SCM and Finance teams.
- Review and verify shipping documents (Invoice, Packing List, Insurance, Permit, BL/AWB).
- Coordinate with clearing agents for customs declaration and duty assessment.
- Follow up until goods are cleared and NBE declaration files are closed on time.
- Request ESL waiver and issue booking instructions when required.
- Coordinate delivery of cleared goods to company premises.
- Confirm receipt of goods with Warehouse/SCM.
- Provide Finance with full import cost details (freight, insurance, duty, taxes, clearance).
- Support correct accounting entries and VAT reclaim documentation.
- Maintain complete import files (PFI, permits, insurance, LC, customs, and payment documents).
- Prepare simple monthly import status reports.
- Support ERCA, NBE, and external audits.
- Maintain regular communication with suppliers, banks, and logistics partners.
Requirments
- Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of experience in import, logistics, or customs-related work.
- Basic knowledge of Ethiopian import, customs, and foreign exchange regulations.
- Good communication and coordination skills.
- Basic computer skills (Excel, email, document handling).
